Do you have a flea infestation and need a flea exterminator? Fleas are very small, flightless insects. As external parasites of mammals and birds, they live by consuming the blood of their hosts.
Adults are up to about 3 mm (0.12 in) long and usually brown. Bodies flattened sideways enable them to move through their host’s fur or feathers. They also have strong claws prevent them from being dislodged.
They lack wings, and have mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood and hind legs adapted for jumping. The latter enable them to leap a distance of some 50 times their body length.
Common Fleas in North Jersey
1. Cat Flea
As the name suggests, cat fleas are commonly found on cats but they also attack dogs, other animals and even humans. Inside the home, their favorite spot is often the carpet but you may find their eggs anywhere in the house other than on your pets.
2. Human Flea
Some folks may say there is no such thing as flea infestation in humans. With the discovery of the human flea, that is no longer true. They stick and hide in the body’s most hairy parts such as the underarm and the head. However, observing a strict hygiene practice will keep these pests away.
3. Chicken Flea
This flea type is usually found with their heads buried in the skin of chickens near the head or face. At first glance, it would look like the fowl’s head or face is infested with black heads but on a closer look, you’ll discover that they are in fact chicken fleas.
4. Sticktight Flea
This type of critter loves to bury their heads into the skin of almost any animal – dog, cat, horse, bird and humans too. Sticktight fleas are quite hard to remove once they have attached themselves to the skin of their victim. They often cause infections and anemia to young animals.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my home has fleas?
Tell-tale signs include pets scratching excessively, seeing tiny dark insects jumping on furniture, bedding, or carpet, noticing small red bites on your ankles and lower legs, and finding “flea dirt”—tiny black pepper-like specks on your pet’s fur or bedding that turn red when wet.
Do I need pets to have a flea infestation?
No. Fleas can enter homes via secondhand furniture, clothing, or even wildlife that passes close to your property (raccoons, opossums, deer). If you’ve recently moved into a home where the previous owners had pets, dormant flea pupae in carpets can hatch when they sense vibration and CO2.
Can fleas transmit diseases?
Yes. Fleas can transmit tapeworms to pets and in rare cases to humans. Historically, fleas spread bubonic plague. In the modern U.S., flea-borne typhus is a more relevant concern. Fleas also cause anemia in heavily infested pets. Prompt professional treatment protects both your family and your animals.
How does PermaKill treat a flea infestation?
PermaKill’s flea treatment targets all life stages—eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Treatment involves indoor application to carpets, baseboards, furniture, and pet resting areas, plus outdoor treatment of yard areas where pets spend time. An Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) is used to prevent immature fleas from reaching adulthood.
Do I need to prepare my home before flea treatment?
Yes. Before treatment, you should vacuum all carpets and floors thoroughly (and discard the bag and place a flea collar in the new bag to prevent fleas from breeding within the vacuum system), wash all pet bedding, remove items from under beds, and have pets treated by a veterinarian. Your PermaKill technician will provide a full preparation checklist before the appointment.
How long does flea treatment take to fully work?
You may see continued flea activity for 2–3 weeks after treatment—this is normal and is caused by new adults hatching from treated pupae. The full treatment cycle takes approximately 4–6 weeks. Avoid vacuuming treated surfaces for several days to allow residual products to remain effective.
Is flea treatment safe for my pets?
PermaKill’s treatments target flea harborage areas and are applied when pets are removed from the home. Pets should remain out of treated areas until surfaces are fully dry—typically 2–4 hours. Your technician will confirm safe re-entry times and recommend that your vet treat your pets simultaneously. We apply EPA-registered products according to strict safety guidelines to minimize exposure. When used according to label directions by licensed professionals, modern Pest Control Methods are safe for families, including children and pets.
Can fleas survive winter in New Jersey?
Fleas in New Jersey can survive indoors year-round in the warmth of a heated home. Outdoor fleas typically die off in cold weather, but flea eggs and pupae in your carpet can remain viable through winter. This is why indoor treatment is critical regardless of the season.
How can I prevent fleas from returning after treatment?
Keep pets on year-round veterinarian-prescribed flea prevention. Vacuum carpets and furniture regularly. Wash pet bedding weekly in hot water. Treat your yard periodically if pets spend time outdoors. Scheduling annual preventive inspections with PermaKill helps catch new activity before it escalates.
